Mobility

Like many small cities, Englewood grew up around automobile travel. As a result, it has a well-developed network of major thoroughfares and collector streets lined with on-street parking. This framework is augmented by light rail and buses, as well as the Englewood Trolley in and around Downtown. High traffic volumes, busy intersections and the lack of pedestrian-level wayfinding make navigating Downtown difficult for cyclists and pedestrians. Parking lots fall short on signage and wayfinding, discouraging potential visitors. The City is currently designing a new wayfinding signage system to address some of these obstacles.

EDDA is looking for ways to better connect Downtown – by encouraging visitors to stop and shop Downtown, instead of bustling by it on busy thoroughfares; by enticing residents and employees to explore Downtown; and by helping everyone get around Downtown easily via foot, wheel, car or trolley.

The EDDA works to:

  • Enhance multimodal mobility and accessibility for all community members
  • Ensure an adequate, well-distributed and well-marked parking supply
  • Strengthen the multimodal network between and throughout Downtown districts
  • Achieve a well-connected Downtown

Thinking Forward

The EDDA is all about making it easier for folks to visit the stores, restaurants, community spaces and celebrations unique to Downtown Englewood. That’s why we’re planning now for parking, whether you’re driving, rolling or riding the bus.

Planning for Old Hampden Improvements

Old Hampden needs some love, above and below ground. This hard-working street is home to Craig Hospital and Swedish Medical Center, new residential apartments and condos, medical offices and local stores and restaurants.

The City of Englewood, with assistance from the EDDA, won a $7.3 million grant from the Denver Regional Council of Governments to make Old Hampden safer and easier to get around for everyone. Detailed planning and construction will happen over the next two years led by the Public Works Department. Improvements include safer crosswalks, wide multi-purpose sidewalk, pedestrian light poles, street furniture and landscaping. The project was shaped by a citizen e-survey, corridor walk and roll, and a diverse project stakeholder advisory committee.

Safer Street Crossings

An improved crosswalk and new HAWK signal are coming between the two paseos on the 3400 block of South Broadway. When pedestrians push the crossing button, the signal triggers a red light for motorists. This much-needed upgrade will help everyone safely cross our main street to shop, socialize and do daily errands. The project is led by the Englewood Public Works Department and funded through a Colorado Department Transportation grant. EDDA assisted with grant writing. Installation is scheduled for late 2023 or early 2024.

More Free Parking

One hundred parking spaces have been added to Downtown Englewood. This includes a new public lot at W. Floyd Ave. and S. Bannock St., near the Gothic Theater and nearby restaurants and bars. With help from the Englewood Public Works Streets and Traffic Operations teams, EDDA cleaned up the small lot on the northeast corner of South Broadway and W. Floyd Ave., restriping it and filling a pothole. New signs were installed at all downtown public parking lots in 2024. There’s also new bicycle parking at the two paseos.

Upon request the city will make reasonable accommodations for alternative access to the map shown below. Submit the request here or call 303-762-2300.

Englewood Rated Colorado's Second Most Walkable City

The technology-powered real estate company Redfin looked at public transit, bike friendliness and walkability when deciding Colorado’s top 10 walkable cities. Redfin cited South Broadway and Hampden South in helping make the city explorable without a car. Downtown Englewood earned a score of 93 out of 100! However you’re getting around Downtown, EDDA is working to make it even more comfortable, safe and accessible with the Old Hampden Complete Streets project (headed by Englewood Public Works) and our South Broadway Public Realm Action Plan.
