Economize – A lot of water goes down the drain, so think about the amount of water being used.
Repair leaks – A leak of one drop per second wastes 2,400 of gallons of water per year. Most leaks are easy to locate and repair.
Install water saving devices – Use water efficient or low flow fixtures.
Here are some suggestions:
Check for leaky faucets, hose connections, and toilets and repair them immediately.
Install aerators or low flow faucets throughout the house.
If washing dishes by hand, scrape or soak the dishes or pots and pans, but do not pre-rinse them. Do not let the water run continuously and use a minimum amount of soap.
If washing dishes by an automatic dishwasher, do a full load and avoid extra cycles.
If purchasing a dishwasher, choose a water saving model.
Use your garbage disposal sparingly.
Do not use running water to defrost frozen food, use the refrigerator or microwave.
When doing laundry, do full loads or if you have a load selector match the water level with load size.
If purchasing a washing machine, choose one that has a load size selector and variable water level control.
Do not let water run when shaving or brushing your teeth.
Keep showers short and bath in swallow water.
Install a low flow shower head, flow restrictor or cut-off valve so you may shut off the water at the shower head while soaping and shampooing.
When mopping, use a string mop because it uses less water for mopping and takes less water to keep clean.
