Co-Responders

The Englewood Police Department utilizes a variety of alternative response to address mental health/substance use needs in the community and has a formal relationship with AllHealth Network, the community behavioral health center for Arapahoe County (excluding Aurora). EPD has invested significantly in the co-responder program since its inception in 2018, expanding from one part-time co-responder to two full-time co-responders now providing 80 hours of services per week.

Co-Responders are licensed mental health professionals employed by AllHealth Network, who actively ride along with patrol officers to calls for service pertaining to behavioral health issues. Co-responders may place individuals in the community on a mental health hold (M1), coordinate the authorization of an Emergency Commitment and transportation to a detox facility, treat individuals on scene, complete an evaluation for placement into a higher level of care, or coordinate transportation to a crisis center or emergency department for voluntary services. Co-Responders also provide training and resources for all members of the Englewood Police Department.

In 2021 EPD invested in an AllHealth Network Case Manager to specifically serve the needs of the unhoused population in the community. The Homelessness Case Manager provides direct services within the community, sometimes responding to calls for services or completing proactive outreach with officers. Direct services also include the completion of VISPDAT, transportation to various programs within the community, navigating intake and establishing out-patient care, helping individuals with initiating or maintaining government assistance and/or basic needs.

September of 2022 saw the launch of the Mobile Response Unit; a civilian unit comprised of a registered nurse and a behavioral health case manager to respond to non-emergent calls for service that are not criminal or violent in nature. This unit can respond to appropriate calls for service without police, helping to ensure the best use of community and police resources.
