Overnight Severe Weather Sheltering

HAAT Force and Movement 5280 will be the primary overnight shelters for the Tri-Cities. HAAT Force will be the main shelter with Movement 5280 serving as an overflow shelter. They activate under the following conditions:

  • The shelter is activated on severe weather nights from October 1st through April 30th 
  • Activated when temperatures are expected to reach 20° or below with no active moisture, or 32° or below with active moisture. 
  • Temperature and moisture must be projected for 3 hours or more during the overnight hours from 6 pm to 6 am. 
  • Moisture is defined as predicted rain or snowfall. It may not include previously fallen moisture remaining on the ground 

Timeline on Shelter Nights

  • HAAT Force will make the weather decision daily between 8 am and 9 am
    • Decisions made on all 7 days of the week
    • Can be determined for up to 3 days
  • The decision will be recorded on the hotline by 9 am – (720-483-7864)
  • Clients will call the hotline daily at 9 am to get the weather determination.
    • If open, registered clients must call to reserve their spot between 10 am and noon (or until full) for shelter that night
    • Reservations for unregistered clients begin from 1 pm to 2 pm only if rooms are still available.
  • The hotline will be transferred to Movement 5280, who will respond to requests for shelter from 2-5pm.
  • Movement 5280 will open the doors for shelter at 6pm, and doors will be closed for the night at 9pm

HAAT Force uses a motel voucher system and has a capacity to shelter approximately 20 individuals and 20 families on any given sheltering night. Movement 5280 has an capacity to serve about 30 people on a sheltering night.

Daytime Heating Centers During Severe Weather

Heating centers will activate if temperatures are expected to fall below 20° during the day, or if temperatures are expected to fall below 32° with moisture.

  • Movement 5280: 3190 S. Grant St., Englewood: 11 a.m.–3 p.m. (Note: Church service is 12:30–1:30 p.m. on Sunday, a hot meal is provided afterwards. Participation in church service is not required.)

  • Englewood Public Library: 1000 Englewood Pkwy, Englewood, CO 80110: 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.
