Free Mediation

Mediation Program

The Neighborhood Resources Program is offering a free mediation program for residents in conflict. Program participants can work with professional mediators to address disputes between neighbors, landlord/tenant issues, property maintenance disagreements, etc.  The city is working with Community Mediation Concepts, a non-profit, that has been resolving conflict for the past 25 years.

What is Mediation?

  • Mediation encourages and enables people in conflict to discuss their concerns and issues in a safe and productive environment, ideally arriving at a cooperative and beneficial resolution

Benefits of Mediation

  • Mediation meetings last around 90 minutes and are 85% successful
  • Process is confidential
  • Mediation is a voluntary process
  • Mediation provides those involved with the power to come up with an effective resolution
  • It is free

How Mediation Works:

  1. Resident fills out the Mediation Referral From
  2. A mediator will reach out to resident that filled out the form and to the other parties involved
  3. Resident will be asked to give a brief overview of the situation. How did the conflict get to this point? What role did you play? Who else is involved?
  4. Mediator will explain mediation and how facilitated conversations work best in resolving ongoing conflict. The mediator will also answer any questions.
  5. Once mediation is agreed to, a meeting will be scheduled at a day and time that works for everyone
  6. At the meeting, a mediator will facilitate a conversation, set expectations so the experience is respectful and safe, help residents discuss concerns and better understand everyone’s perspective
  7. Together, options and solutions will be discussed and an agreement that all parties contributes to, consents to and signs will be created.
