Englewood Community Garden Rules & Regulations

City of Englewood
Englewood Community Garden

RULES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following rules and responsibilities outline the management of the Englewood Community Garden and its site property. They have been established by the City of Englewood, Parks, Recreation and Library Department, Denver Urban Gardens (DUG), and the Englewood Community Garden Steering Committee and act as a basis for a use agreement between the parties. In turn, the City of Englewood and DUG provide gardeners with the authority and permission to use the garden site. We, as a community, have a responsibility to keep our garden managed effectively. The garden is a privilege. Everything works smoothly when people are involved in its overall upkeep.

Please treat your fellow gardeners as you would like to be treated. DUG gardens have a volunteer Garden Steering Committee to assign plots, organize maintenance, set and govern rules as well as coordinate related activities. The Garden Steering Committee shall not discriminate based on race, creed, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, marital status, age, sex, sexual orientation, or disability in this garden membership and the administration of its programs.

You acknowledge as a participating gardener responsibility for the following:

  1. I understand, accept, and assume the risks associated with participation in any and all activities. I will conduct myself in a manner which is mutually beneficial to all participants.
  2. I understand that this is an all-organic garden and the use of non-organic treatments is prohibited: No insecticides, herbicides, fungicides or chemical fertilizers (e.g. no Miracle Grow). Specific treatments must be presented and approved by the Garden Steering Committee prior to application.
  3. I agree to volunteer a minimum of 15 hours per plot (regardless of size.) Volunteer hours may be fulfilled by attending scheduled volunteer workdays, DUG trainings, Kickoff meeting, participation on a subcommittee(s), and by doing regular garden maintenance. Note: Regular garden maintenance does not include maintenance of your personal plot. Every gardener is required to serve on at least one subcommittee. See Volunteer Hours Description and Log Sheet.
  4. I understand that the maintenance of common areas, fencing, trees, trash receptacles, compost bins, street and alley right of way and water lines are the shared responsibilities of all plot holders. Refer to your Maintenance Guidelines for details.
  5. I understand my plot fee in non-refundable.
  6. I will have my plot planted by June 1 or my plot may be forfeited or reassigned. I will weed, water, harvest and maintain my garden and the designated plot area that I am responsible for on a timely basis (at least once a week with watering more frequently.) I understand that if my garden appears to not be watered and/or overrun with weeds, I will be given ten (10) day notice to maintain my plot. If this is not accomplished, my plot may be reassigned with no refund. If I find for any reason I cannot care for my plot for any length of time, I will make arrangements for the plot to be taken care of during my absence. Refer to your Maintenance Guidelines for details.
  7. I will tend and care for my plot in accordance with the Garden Maintenance Guidelines. I will not water, maintain, or harvest another’s plot without their permission.
  8. I will keep my plot clean and neat, using available garbage and recycling bins and compost areas. If trash cans are full, I will use plastic bags located in the shed.
  9. I am a “good neighbor”, always taking into consideration the impact of what I grow in my plots and the surrounding area. I will check with other gardeners if I intend to plant tall or spreading plants. Plants that grow over 4 feet tall (e.g. corn or sunflowers) must have the Garden Steering Committee’s approval.
  10. I am responsible for clearing and tilling my plot by November 1. Refer to Maintenance Guidelines.
  11. Should I have a dispute with a gardener, gardeners or the Garden Steering Committee and a reasonable solution cannot be reached, I agree to have DUG act as the arbitrator. I further agree to adhere to DUG’s final decision.
  12. I will not sell any produce I grow. If possible, I will donate excess produce for donation to local food banks or charities. See Subcommittee’s List for additional details on this program.
  13. Any children I bring into the garden area will be directly (within walking distance) supervised by me at all times, especially when using tools.
  14. Pets, other than service animals, will not be brought into the garden area.
  15. Smoking is not permitted in the garden area.
  16. Radios are discouraged in the garden area.
  17. No alcohol or illegal substances are allowed on the entire garden site, including the parking areas by City Ordinance 5-3C-3 and 12-47-901.
