City of Englewood, Colorado
Home MenuStormwater
Stormwater runoff results from rainwater and snowmelt that flows over land or impervious surfaces, such as streets, driveways, sidewalks, or roof tops and does not absorb into the ground. As water flows over these surfaces, it collects pollutants and debris such as trash, dirt, yard waste, pet waste, fertilizer, and oil which are carried directly into the city’s storm drainage systems.Unlike the water that goes down your sink drain, stormwater is not treated at a wastewater treatment plant and discharges directly into local creeks and streams, such as the South Platte River.
Englewood’s waterways are a precious resource, as they provide drinking water, recreational opportunities, and wildlife habitat for our community. To protect waterways from pollutants that are transported via stormwater runoff, the city implements programs in accordance with its Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit.
Stormwater runoff can also cause flooding due to the amount of water entering the storm drainage system or if debris prevents the system from functioning properly. To better protect properties, the city has undertaken long-term planning efforts for capital improvement projects to upgrade and maintain the city’s storm drainage infrastructure.
Dumping liquid or solid waste into a storm drain or creek is a crime. If you see illegal dumping, report it to the Englewood’s Code Enforcement Division at 303-762-2335.
