South Englewood Flood Reduction Project
(SMP Projects S1 and S2)
Localized flooding in the South Englewood drainage basin is caused by bottlenecks in the existing storm sewer system, which prevent stormwater runoff from flowing through the system fast enough during major rain events. This project will enhance the capacity of the city’s storm sewer system to allow more stormwater to flow through the system from upstream locations, such as South Acoma Street near Tufts Ave and Rotolo Park.

South Acoma Area Storm Sewer Improvements Project
(SMP Projects S3 and S4)
The city contracted with Ulteig Engineering to provide in-depth analysis of the areas identified in the Stormwater Master Plan as Projects S3 and S4. This work with Ulteig was initiated to identify changes to the existing system that would improve the stormwater conveyance during significant rainfall events. The goal was to identify system improvements so as to convey at least a 25-year storm event without flooding onto private properties.

Old Hampden Public Improvements Project
(SMP CIP-SW-003)
Flooding has routinely been reported near Swedish Medical Center. During extreme rain events, roof drainage and insufficient drainage structures have contributed to flooding of the hospital emergency room. To address these issues and ensure emergency vehicles can more easily access the hospital during rain events, final design of new water main, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer to replace & upgrade the existing lines along Old Hampden Avenue from approximately Broadway to Clarkson Street is being conducted.

Northeast Englewood Storm Sewer Improvements Project
(SMP CIP-SW-013, CIP-SW-025, CIP-SW-026)
The Northeast Englewood basin covers the primarily residential area from the intersection at Hampden Ave & University Blvd. to the intersection at Yale Ave & Pennsylvania St. The project area consists of the main storm system constructed in 1972 — identified as “Line 1”, “Line 3A”, “Line 3B”, and connected auxiliary lines — in the original construction drawings prepared by Sellards & Griggs. The drainage area identified as the Northeast Basin has experienced periodic flooding and overflow events. The goal of this project is to identify, design and construct improvements to the surface drainage. The results of the Ulteig study and recommendations can be viewed here.
